I. Why Preparedness Matters
Disease outbreaks can place sudden pressure on health facilities, health workers and the communities they serve. HEPTO supports preparedness by helping facilities build practical readiness through training, appropriate equipment and planning shaped around local needs. We work with health teams and partners to strengthen the people, systems and supplies that help facilities identify concerns early and continue safe care.
II. Building Facility Readiness
Facility readiness starts before an outbreak is identified. HEPTO works with facility teams to strengthen practical systems that help staff act early and continue safe care.
- Set clear roles, reporting lines and communication contacts.
- Review triage, patient flow, referral pathways and coordination with local health authorities.
- Reinforce infection prevention and control routines, including hand hygiene, appropriate protective equipment, cleaning and waste management.
- Identify priority supplies, equipment and maintenance needs for each facility.
Ebola, COVID-19 and Other Outbreaks
Preparedness must reflect the disease and the way it spreads. Ebola and Marburg outbreaks call for early recognition, prompt isolation and referral, careful infection prevention, correct PPE use, and safe cleaning and waste routines.

COVID-19: protect teams and sustain care
The COVID-19 response highlighted clear triage and patient flow, infection prevention, staff protection, reliable communication, and continuity of essential health services. Training helps teams use procedures and equipment confidently before pressure rises.

HEPTO works with facilities to translate these lessons into local plans, practical exercises, health-worker training, and appropriate equipment and supplies.
IV. A Practical Path to Preparedness
- Understand current capacity. Work with facility teams to identify strengths, gaps and priority needs.
- Agree on a readiness plan. Clarify roles, communication, referral links, supplies and the steps staff will follow.
- Train and equip. Provide practical training and support for agreed equipment and supply priorities.
- Review and learn. Use exercises and follow-up discussions to improve the plan as needs change.
V. Work With HEPTO
Preparedness is strongest when facility teams, community partners and local health authorities plan together. HEPTO welcomes collaboration to strengthen training, equipment readiness, referral links and continuous learning.
- Discuss health-worker training and refresher sessions.
- Coordinate facility equipment and supply priorities.
- Support facility-level preparedness plans and practical exercises.

VI. Stronger Facilities, Safer Communities
Prepared facilities are better positioned to protect health workers, maintain essential services and respond in coordination with their communities. Through training and appropriate equipment, HEPTO works with local partners to strengthen readiness across Kenya, Somalia, Somaliland and Ethiopia.
